Vienna in a Day - Travel Guide

November 11, 2015

Dear readers,

So last year, I went to Vienna for Christmas break. Since the holidays are coming, I've written a short guide for you about the city.

Vienna is the capital of Austria, located in Central Europe, neighboring with Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. It is the largest city in Austria. Most locals can speak English, yet Austria’s official language is German.

The city’s airport is outside of Vienna, but there are many options to get there. The best option is to go by CAT (City Airport Train), which takes around 20 to 30 minutes to the city center, or by the local train services, cheaper but doesn’t go directly to the city center (Mitte). There are also shuttle buses to hotels.

Its public transportation is also very reliable and tourist friendly. There are buses, trams, and trains. To take tourist buses (hop on-hop off) are not recommended, because it is a lot cheaper and more reliable to use the city’s public transport.

Although its public transportation is really efficient, the best way to get the most of Vienna is slowly by foot. Navigate through the Ringstrasse, a wide boulevard surrounded by extravagant palaces, galleries, and museums. Most of Vienna’s main attractions are located within the ring. Stroll down the Stephansplatz in the downtown area with diverse shops and cafes. In the center locates the St. Stephens Cathedral. Then sit down at one of the many cafés, and order some coffee with a slice of the famous Schwartz Torte, an Austrian Black Forest cake.

Living the 19th-century era, visit the Schonbrunn Palace, which housed the Habsburg Dynasty, and currently being the official residence of the President of Austria. Surrounding the palace is the Volksgarten or ‘People’s Garden’, where Marie Antoinette used to stroll around a couple hundred years ago. Schonbrunn has a classic design.

During the night, Vienna offers many luxurious restaurants, to delicious street foods. There are many restaurants along crowded streets. After dinner, head to Vienna State Opera, that has amazed opera and ballet lovers since the 19th century. It is where legendary composers have performed, such as Beethoven and Strauss. Then take a backstage tour to reveal the past of the building.

The capital of Austria sure has a lot to offer. Visit other neighboring countries, such as Hungary and Czech Republic. I hope this guide will come to use for you somehow. Thank you for reading loves.

xx Mariana
